We’re Making History, the Future!
AKEL, emerging stronger from the elections, marches forward
The Goal: Progressive Change in 2028
28 June 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The strengthening and growth of AKEL-Left-Social Alliance in both percentages and number of votes in the recent parliamentary elections sent out a powerful message that the Left was, is, and will continue to be a leading force in our country. The 100-year history of the Communist Party of Cyprus-AKEL continues on an upward trajectory, becoming a future of hope and optimism.
This is the key message from the plenary of the Central Committee of AKEL, which convened on Saturday, 27 June 2026, to assess the results of the 24 May parliamentary elections, analyze and outline the new political environment, and determine AKEL’s strategic priorities for the coming period. Following an introductory speech by the General Secretary of AKEL, the Central Committee conducted an in-depth discussion and approved the relevant document prepared by the Political Bureau of the Party. This dialogue will continue in the fall among the thousands of members and supporters of AKEL and the Social Alliance.
The assessment is universal that the result of the parliamentary elections represents a significant electoral success and a pivotal political victory for the Left and the progressive movement of Cyprus. AKEL reversed the downward trend of previous years, increased its percentage share of the vote and the number of votes cast, retained its parliamentary seats (Note: 15 out of 56 MP’s), and saw a significant increase in support among the young generation.
AKEL also emerged politically stronger through the procedure to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives and distribute the Chairs of the Parliamentary Committees, because the Party rejected petty political behind the scenes wheeling and dealing and demonstrated reliability, consistency in upholding its principles, and self-confidence. We shall continue on this path.
A key factor in our electoral success was—by general consensus—AKEL’s militant stance, both inside and outside the House of Representatives, against the arbitrariness of the banks and the powerful economic interests that are plundering the country. our consistent and systematic efforts to address the suffocating economic pressures experienced by the overwhelming majority of our society.
AKEL’s electoral gains will, in practice, mean greater strength for society and for the major battles that await us: the struggle to ensure dignified wages and pensions, the expansion of collective bargaining agreements, the taxation of wealth and exorbitant profits, tackling the housing crisis, restricting the sweeping purchases of real estate property by foreign investors, curbing expensiveness/the high cost of living and combating energy poverty.
With regard to the new political environment, beyond the realignments reflected in the political party landscape, the bigger picture shows that a large number of our fellow citizens either abstained from the elections or are not registered on the voter lists, while tens of thousands of others are not represented in Parliament because the parties they voted for failed to pass the electoral threshold. For this reason, AKEL’s efforts will continue to reach out and focus —not on the party system and its established structures—but on society, on the large section of the population that feels disillusioned and has abandoned hope, and that is waiting for solutions for today and a hope for the future.
Towards this end, the Central Committee calls on all the cadres/militants and members of AKEL, as well as the friends of the Social Alliance, to intensify the Left’s presence in Cypriot society in all fields and sectors and at all levels: in workplaces, in local communities, universities, in social movements, and in the digital world. So that our message reaches everywhere—that there is hope and a future, and that it lies with the Left and its struggles.
At the same time, in light of the emerging momentum surrounding the Cyprus problem, AKEL makes it clear that it will steadfastly stand by its position in favor of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, for the safeguarding all the negotiation convergences that have been recorded and the resumption of the negotiations from the point where they were suspended in 2017. AKEL makes it clear in every direction that it will resist any attempts to dismantle the negotiation acquis or any scenarios for the involvement of NATO in the solution of the Cyprus problem.
AKEL is the force that has the influence, the knowledge, and the will to drive developments toward a solution and reunification, and for this reason, it will take new initiatives in the coming period to inform and mobilize the Cypriot people.
Finally, the Central Committee of AKEL reiterated that progressive change in the country’s governance by 2028 is our next strategic goal, and for this reason, sooner than ever before, we will set the procedures in motion to ensure we are ready to wage the great battle. AKEL and the Left are the backbone and the main pillar of the country’s progressive movement, and they recognize their historic responsibility to do everything in their power to build the broad social majority that will bring about change.
Cyprus and its people can no longer withstand the government’s shifts between the right and the far right, the Anastasiades system and corruption, or the lobbies of the banks and the establishment. Cyprus and its people deserve a new chapter of hope, and AKEL declares that it stands ready to wage this struggle.
