Statement by Stavri Kalopsidiotou, Head of the Cyprus Problem Office of the Central Committee of AKEL
8 June 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The contacts of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin in Cyprus are taking place within a specific framework: that of the effort for a resumption of substantive negotiations aiming at a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem based on the agreed basis. The critical nature of what will be discussed by Maria Angela Holguin during her meetings with the two leaders is goes without saying. The direction that the two leaders will give to the effort underway must also be considered as given, by projecting positions that should give an impetus to the prospect of a comprehensive solution as soon as possible.
AKEL recalls that, for the first time since the collapse of the Crans-Montana talks, the leaders of the two communities have publicly declared their support for a resumption of the negotiations from the point where they were suspended. They must therefore, at this critical juncture, demonstrate the necessary resolve and with consistency take those initiatives that will pave the way for further steps, starting with the convening of an informal conference by the UN Secretary-General in the near future.
The safeguarding of the convergences recorded and the content of the Guterres Framework, with negotiation only of the pending issues, through a well-prepared procedure that allows for the conclusion of a strategic agreement, which in turn will create preconditions for a positive outcome, is the only way forward.
Having formulated coherent proposals precisely in this direction, AKEL underlines that the era of aimless experimentations and contradictory positions has passed and calls on the President of the Republic to take those initiatives that will transform hope into a prospect for the liberation and reunification of our homeland and people.
