AKEL for World Environment Day 2026

Humanity is confronted with the increasingly severe consequences of the climate crisis. Due to its geographical location, Cyprus is expected to experience these consequences earlier and with greater intensity than other regions of Europe. Drought, extreme temperatures, desertification, and the degradation of natural ecosystems are now a reality that affects citizens’ daily lives, agricultural production and the country’s development prospects.

This is why ecosystem restoration, environmental protection, and environmental and social justice must be placed at the top of the agenda for the policies and measures being developed.

Despite warnings from the scientific community, the government’s environmental policy continues to lack comprehensive planning. This results in increased environmental costs, public health burdens from pollution, and higher living costs for households.

Environmental protection is not just about forests, coastlines, and biodiversity. It concerns citizens’ right to clean air, clean water, affordable energy, a quality life, and a secure future for future generations.

AKEL has taken the lead in recent years in launching initiatives in this direction and will continue to fight for policies that protect the environment and improve citizens’ quality of life. Policies that ensure clean air and water, protect agricultural land and biodiversity, effectively address the water crisis, provide cheaper and cleaner energy, and pursue a development policy that benefits society.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, AKEL reaffirms its commitment to continue fighting for the protection of Cyprus’s natural wealth, to address the consequences of the climate crisis, to protect water resources, cheaper and cleaner energy, and for development that serves the needs of society rather than the interests of the privileged few.

Defending the environment means defending life, health, and the future of our country.
