The General Secretary of AKEL meets the Chargé d’Affaires of China

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met today with the Chargé d’Affaires of China, Zhou Yunliang, with whom he discussed international developments of mutual interest.

Regarding the issue of Taiwan and the ongoing attempts to recognize a separate entity, the General Secretary of AKEL emphasized that international law and the UN Charter must form the basis for resolving problems. On this basis, he reiterated AKEL’s position in support of the one-China principle, underlining that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole and legitimate representative of the country at the UN and in international forums. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and any provocative statements and efforts by internal and external actors to promote “independence” of Taiwan, run counter to the one-China principle.

Stefanos Stefanou emphasized AKEL’s strong and categorical opposition to attempts to promote Taiwan’s “independence” agenda, and reiterated support for the Chinese government in achieving the country’s reunification. He also stressed that Cyprus must remain steadfast on the One-China principle.

Finally, he thanked the Chinese diplomat for his country’s support—particularly as a permanent member of the UN Security Council—in resuming negotiations from where they were left in Crans-Montana and in the efforts to reunify Cyprus and its people.
