The formal DISY–DIKO–ELAM alliance currently in the making poses a serious threat to democracy and the country

Statement by AKEL Parliamentary Spokesperson G.Loukaides

18 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The prospect of an official alliance between DISY–DIKO–far-right ELAM is now imminent.

The truth is that what we are seeing today from DISY’s position towards the far right comes as no surprise, given that its stance towards ELAM can only be described as extremely contradictory.

On the one hand, DISY were calling ELAM—up until recently that is—a “neo-Nazi entity” and a “branch of Golden Dawn.”

On the other hand, however, they have been engaging for years in political deals, give-and-take and the systematic normalization of the far right.

We can see this from Anastasiades’ first election to the Presidency, through to the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to ELAM’s current role as a reserve force for the Christodoulides government, which they also support. However, where we truly express our deep regret and concern is regarding the sad downward path of the DIKO leadership.

Up until yesterday, DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos and DIKO officials were calling ELAM the “Golden Dawn of Cyprus,” accusing it of being nostalgic for EOKA B and the Greek junta. They were publicly defending the stance of Greek officials who refused even to meet with ELAM.

Today, however, not only do they not rule out cooperation with ELAM for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives, with an eye toward the 2028 presidential elections, but they also characterize AKEL’s position for the political and institutional isolation of the far right as “extreme.”

We warn, in the strongest possible terms, that what DISY and DIKO are seeking is not the formation of some regular political cooperation. It is yet another step towards the normalization of intolerance, racism, chauvinism and hate rhetoric. It poses a serious threat to democracy, our institutions, and human rights in our country.

That is precisely why the 24 May parliamentary elections represent yet another critical test for democracy and our country. Because only a strong AKEL can serve as a real bulwark against the far right and against the now-official DISY–DIKO–ELAM alliance that is currently in the making.
