AKEL expresses its concern over the conduct of a military exercise in the Akamas Peninsula
16 April 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
AKEL expresses its concern over the conduct of a military exercise in the Akamas Peninsula.
Akamas is one of Cyprus’s most important natural heritage areas, designated as a nature protection zone, with unique biodiversity, sensitive ecosystems, and invaluable environmental value. Conducting military exercises in such an area poses serious dangers to the natural environment, wildlife, and ecological balance. The presence of military vehicles, helicopters, and military units, even for training purposes, is not in line with the character and protected status of the area.
This decision exposes the government, which once again demonstrates that its proclamations regarding the protection of Akamas remain empty talk. Akamas is not a place for conducting any military exercises.
AKEL calls on the government and the Ministry of Defence to reconsider this decision and ensure that Akamas remains a strictly protected area, free from any such activities.
