AKEL is hosting the “Study Days” of the Left Group in the European Parliament in Cyprus on 3-4th February. Twenty-one MEPs will participate in the meeting, including Manon Aubry, Co-chair of the Group.

The “Study Days” are held every six months in the member state holding the Presidency of the European Council and provide an opportunity for MEPs and the Group’s staff to exchange views and elaborate positions on specific topics. At the same time, they provide an opportunity for MEPs from the Left to learn about developments and working people’s struggles in that country.

The meeting will be opened on Tuesday morning, 3 February, by the General Secretary of AKEL and the Co-chair of the Left Group, Manon Aubry.

The thematic sections that follow will address three major issues currently facing the EU and the peoples of Europe: Social justice vs. austerity, with an emphasis on policies to reduce the cost of living, the Housing crisis and policies to guarantee the right to housing for all, and Peace & War and the violation of international law, with an emphasis on the cases of Cyprus and Palestine.

On Tuesday afternoon, 3 February, MEPs will gather outside the military airbase of the British base at Akrotiri, which was used in the war against Gaza. They will then visit the Kourris dam, where the effects of the drought are evident, whilst they will subsequently meet with the Local Community Councils of the areas that have been affected by the fires of July 2025.

On Wednesday afternoon, 4 February, they will visit the fenced-off area of Famagusta, where they will hold meetings inside the walls of the city of (occupied) Famagusta.
