Encouraging positive atmosphere at the meeting between the two leaders
20 November 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The positive atmosphere in which today’s first official meeting between Mr. Christodoulides and Mr. Erhurman took place is encouraging. This is also confirmed by the United Nations announcement.
The position expressed by President Christodoulides after the meeting, that the key issue is the resumption of negotiations from where they had remained at Crans-Montana, is in our view satisfactory, given that this has been AKEL’s long-standing position. This, of course, implies full respect for the Guterres Framework, the adoption of all the convergences that have been recorded, including political equality, and negotiation on the outstanding issues, a position that reflects the approach of the UN Secretary-General himself.
At the same time, we note that the definition of specific initiatives in the immediate future marks an important development. Both the agreement for a joint meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Olgin, in December, and the resumption of meetings between the negotiators to prepare for a new expanded meeting under Mr. Guterres, can, under certain pre conditions, contribute constructively to the effort to resume substantive negotiations.
We expect the President of the Republic to immediately convene the National Council to brief the political forces about the precise content of the meeting held, but also in view of the next steps that have been decided.
