The government’s irresponsibility exposes the country and its citizens

Statement by Vakis Charalambous, member of the Central Committee of AKEL on Electricity Interconne

14 October 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The government’s stance on the crucial and costly project of the electricity interconnection is irresponsible. The ongoing double talk is destroying any trace of Cyprus’ credibility and disrupting our relations with Greece.

The President of the Republic speaks of blackmail on the one hand, and on the other, declares his commitment to implementing an agreement, without disclosing its terms and conditions.

The Energy Minister is holding meetings to resolve regulatory issues, while the Finance Minister is questioning the project’s viability.

So how can a project move forward when the Finance Minister himself questions its viability, citing studies that no one has refuted to date?

It is clear that the government has no answers to the critical and fundamental questions that are being asked, nor does it have a plan to break the deadlock. It bears a grave responsibility for entering into an agreement that will burden the economy and society with costs, even if the project is not implemented.

As long as the government contradicts itself and fails to clarify its position, Cyprus will remain exposed and taxpayers will risk paying dearly for yet another energy fiasco.

We call on Mr. Christodoulides once again to stop evading the issue and to call the parties to a meeting to brief them responsibly. AKEL demands to be fully informed about the commitments made by the government and its future plans— if, of course, it has any — and to set out its views in full on an issue of major geostrategic and energy importance.
