AKEL votes against the 2024 budget of the Christodoulides government
13 December 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The Central Committee of AKEL convened today and discussed the State Budget for 2024. The Central Committee of AKEL unanimously decided to vote against the Budget of the Christodoulides government, which does not respond neither to the pressing problems facing Cypriot society, nor to the structural distortions of the country’s developmental model. Voting against the budget is a stand characterised by responsibility and consistency towards a government which, not only on the economy, but also on the major issues facing the country, falls way short of the expectations and needs of our people and country.
The 2024 budget reflects the overall economic policy pursued by the Christodoulides government, which, as the government itself states, continues on the path that the Anastasiades government followed given that:
- It continues to refuse to return to society even a part of the hundreds of millions in state revenues that are coming out of people’s pockets due to inflation.
- It exacerbates the devaluation of labour and the purchasing power of wages, widening the gap between the people of labour on the one hand and big capital and the banks on the other.
- It refuses to confront the powerful interests, the cartels and established interests in the economy and the market in order to provide solutions for society, the middle strata, households and small businesses.
- It does not respond to the acute problems of poverty, housing and the lack of a modern social policy centred on working parents and families.
AKEL insists that there is another way forward for Cyprus’ economy that should unleash our country’s development potential with respect for the environment and working people. That produces dignified quality jobs and prosperity for all. That should lay the foundation for a modern welfare state.
