AKEL meeting with the Association of Prisoners of War 1974

An AKEL delegation, headed by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, had a meeting today with a delegation from the Pancyprian Association of Prisoners of War 1974.

During the meeting, the issues facing the 1974 prisoners of war were discussed, as well as the manifold activity of the Association in the field of enlightenment, both within and outside Cyprus.

In the Association’s opinion, the need to increase the honorary allowance granted to the POW’s and its payment on a monthly basis was pointed out, as well as the importance of providing financial assistance towards the Association so that it can carry out its numerous activities.

On AKEL’s part, the Party’s long-standing stance of supporting the demands, needs and addressing the problems of the 1974 prisoners of war, the victims and invalids of the coup d’état and the invasion was noted. For this precise reason, AKEL will proceed to bring the issue back for discussion in the Parliamentary Refugee Committee in order to find solutions.

The meeting was attended on behalf of AKEL by the President of the Parliamentary Refugee Committee, Nikos Kettiros, and Giorgos Vassiliou, Head of the Refugee Bureau of the Party. The delegation of the Association of Prisoners of War included the Association’s President Vassos Christou and members of its Council.
