AKEL on World Mental Health Day
11 October 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
“Make Mental Health a global priority”. Under the slogan of this year’s World Mental Health Day, AKEL contributes to the effort to raise awareness in society on this issue.
This day reminds us that mental health remains vital for human beings. For physical, mental well-being and social health.
It also underlines the need for action and initiatives to be taken by the state and society for enlightenment, prevention, support and treatment.
It sets before society the challenge to address the stigma that accompanies people with mental illness, their families and their home environment.
Especially today, when social problems and inequalities are multiplying, when poverty is taking away opportunities for a dignified life, when the right to housing has become an elusive dream and when the anxiety surrounding the future prevails, the state has an obligation to put mental health among its principal priorities.
This can be achieved, inter alia, in many ways by:
- substantially strengthening the staffing of Mental Health Services,
- modernising and improving the services provided; and
- combating the stigma and prejudice associated with mental disorders.
AKEL, prioritising the health of society as a whole, has elaborated – with the assistance of scientists and experts – a comprehensive policy proposal on mental health issues. A proposal which contributes to prevention, treatment and social reintegration. A proposal – ●guide to address the challenges facing society today.
Mental Health is a social good and access to its services is a human right of each and every person.
