AKEL declares that the government will find AKEL confronting them if it attempts to bypass the conditions that were set by the Environmental Authority with regards the Akamas local plan.

Speaking to ‘Astra’ radio, the Head of the Environment Office of the C.C. of AKEL Christina Nicolaou, after stressing that the government must either refute or verify these reports, clarified that the Environmental Authority’s conditions are substantive and binding.

Christina Nicolaou pointed out that the attempts to bypass the opinion of the Environmental Authority on Akamas prove that the voices raised revealing that attempts were indeed being made to serve specific interests were justified.

The Head of the Environment Office of the C.C. of AKEL underlined that the government must not try to find loopholes, saying that nature conservation areas must not be allowed to be developed on in the way the government is seeking. She added that this type of development is not compatible with environmental protection, noting that there are other ways and that hotels are not the only option before us. Furthermore, C.Nicolaou also said that the government has the duty and obligation to harmonize Cypriot legislation with European Environmental Legislation.

As regards the reactions by owners of land in the Akamas area, Christina Nicolaou said that AKEL is not ignoring them, pointing out that a way must be found to exploit it, either by transferring the rate or by offering compensation.
