The President continues his erratic course – He exposed the Foreign Minister
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas on the Cyprus problem
7 September 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Cyprus is heading towards permanent partition. However, Mr. Anastasiades continues on the same dangerous and erratic course he pursues, always with the uncritical support of the leadership of the ruling DISY party.
Exposing the Foreign Minister, Mr. Anastasiades reiterated yesterday that the idea of returning to the 1960 Constitution is a proposal, which he will indeed outline to the Secretary General of the UN. This is the surest way for talks to never start and Mr. Anastasiades knows this. The question is whether this is ultimately what he is seeking.
Mr. Anastasiades also spoke of concessions supposedly proposed to him by AKEL and without anything in return as he claims. However, he hides the fact that AKEL’s proposals set the conclusion of a strategic agreement on the Guterres Framework and a comprehensive solution, respectively, as preconditions for the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey. In contrast, of course, to his own proposals, which go beyond the “red lines” of the Greek Cypriot side, with the most blatant being his incomprehensible action of discussing the two state solution behind closed doors.
Today it is clearer than ever before that Cyprus has two paths before it. The path leading to the permanent partition of Cyprus and the path of the solution, liberation and reunification. Mr. Anastasiades must clarify which path he has chosen, especially now that he is proposing a return to the 1960 Constitution.
