The government is addicted to lies – the President destroys the last shreds of credibility
AKEL C.C. member Haris Polycarpou replies to the Government Spokesman
26 August 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Let the Government not try to confuse the issue and give a reply on the issue that exists before us. Which solution does the President of the Republic prefer?
Does he prefer a two-state solution with which he from time to time was sounding out international players and on the domestic front, the return to the 1960 Constitution or does he support bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality as provided for in the UN resolutions?
As long as the President of the Republic does not make his position clear, he is destroying any remaining shreds of credibility. Besides, it does not need AKEL to say that the President is not convincing. His own chief negotiator, Mr. Mavroyiannis, has already said so.
Given that the government ruling forces are addicted to lies, they claim that the proposal submitted by AKEL on the Cyprus problem provides for further concessions. Nothing could be further from the truth. The proposal submitted by AKEL seeking to create a momentum for the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were interrupted at Crans Montana, is based on what the Secretary General of the UN himself says. That is precisely why AKEL’s proposal is credible, as opposed to what the President says, which has no trace of credibility.
AKEL categorically rejects the acceptance of sovereign equality. However, the one who is giving Turkey ample room to raise the issue is none other than N. Anastasiades himself with his inaction and contradictions on the Cyprus problem.
We repeat that politics is judged by its results. It is during the days of Anastasiades – DISY government that the permanent partition of Cyprus is knocking on our door. This does not seem to worry the President.
