The Health Minister must respect the trade union norms
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
4th June 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
It is with great surprise that we have followed developments with regards the Minister of Health’s stand towards nurses and the Cyprus Nurses Union (PASYNO). The disciplinary proceedings against nurses who participated in trade union measures are another example of the government’s authoritarianism. The hypocrisy and contradiction between the government’s statements expressing its gratitude to nurses for their work during the pandemic and the government ruling force’s anti-trade union intimidating behavior against them is glaring.
AKEL calls on the Minister to respect trade union norms and to take all the necessary actions with respect to the laws that safeguard working people’s right to assert the self-evident through their trade union organisations.
AKEL recognizes, respects and values the work carried out by nurses since the beginning of the pandemic, but also our country’s public health system at all times, always at the service of citizens.
