Eurostat reveals Cyprus tops income inequalities table
Statement by the Head of the Economic Studies Bureau Charis Polycarpou
28th May 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Eight years of the N. Anastasiades – DISY government has put Cyprus as a result of the policies it has pursued top of the table with regards income inequalities according to figures released by the European Statistical Office Eurostat.
Cyprus has recorded the biggest gap between the high-salaried and low-salaried working people, according to a survey published yesterday by Eurostat.
The government has issued dozens of announcements before the elections. But it didn’t find not even a single word to say about the need to protect labour rights and ensure dignified wages for all working people.
Now is the time to achieve the safeguarding of the minimum wage and elementary basic rights in every occupation through legislation.
Now is the time to make the implementation of the agreed collective agreements mandatory.
Now is the time to protect working people from the deregulation of labour relations.
Now is the time to strengthen the voice of AKEL, the voice of the working people.
