AKEL Stefanou: The President should not reopen convergences, nor put decentralized federation on the table

The international community’s goal with the informal five-party meeting in Geneva is the resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem. AKEL considers that these negotiations should be conducted on the basis of the solution set out by the UN and that they should resume once again from where they had remained at Crans Montana, safeguarding the convergences recorded so far and on the basis of the 6 points of the Guterres Framework, AKEL spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou pointed out on Astra radio station.
Speaking to the morning Edition and commenting on the government’s criticism of AKEL about the Party’s criticism, Stefanos Stefanou advised Mr. Kousios to read the history of the Cyprus problem and especially the period of the Christofias-Talat talks and how it became possible for extremely significant convergences to be recorded.
If there is a prospect of a solution so far, he added, this is due to precisely those convergences.
Referring to President Anastasiades, the AKEL spokesperson said that the President must go to the informal meeting with a clear position on when and how the talks will resume. He should also not reopen any convergences or put decentralized federation on the negotiating table, he went on to say. On the contrary, he noted, he must restore convergences to where they were, especially on the issue of the rotating presidency.
It would be a mistake, the AKEL spokesperson underlined, for the President to entrench himself behind the position of the other side for a two-state solution.
S.Stefanou also noted that in the informal five-party system, the Greek Cypriot side must be ready to address any proposal from the Turkish side, as long as the President adheres to the position he must take.
