Government revised budget follows the same socio-economic philosophy
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the 2021 revised budget
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th January 2021, Nicosia
Today we discussed the revised budget submitted by the government. It is a well-known fact that, for the first time in the history of the Republic of Cyprus, the state budget was rejected. This should have made the government reflect on this fact in order to make the necessary important changes too. It didn’t do so!
The revised budget:
- Follows the same socio-economic philosophy, with which we disagree with which is precisely why we voted against all the annual budgets tabled by the Anastasiades-DISY government.
- Retains the same economic forecasts for 4.5% growth at a time when even the government admits that, due to the pandemic continuing, Cyprus will go through a recession. This is an admission that the budget doesn’t reflect reality. There is no “B” plan on the part of the government.
- It includes many “pledges”, which the government presents as a commitment for promoting various policies. The government’s pledges, however, have been proven so many times to be meaningless.
- It does not propose solutions to existing problems, such as on the issue of foreclosures and Non Performing Loan’s, but also problems caused by the pandemic, such as the issue of rents, installments, etc.
AKEL, as it does every time, will examine the budget in the leading bodies of the Party and will express its position accordingly.
