The resignation forced on journalist Andreas Paraschos is a major issue for the press in our country
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th January 2021, Nicosia
The resignation forced on the Editor-in-Chief of “Kathimerini” newspaper Andreas Paraschos, after an article he wrote with accusations about President Anastasiades, constitutes a major issue for the press in our country, which is an indicator of the quality of democracy. AKEL expresses its support and solidarity with Andreas Paraschos.
Cyprus needs journalism that scrutinizes and exercises control over the status quo, judges the political and economic power, highlights our people’s real problems and expresses its point of view boldly.
Such journalism has never been more needed than today, because the country is ruled by a government that has broken all records in authoritarianism, arrogance, and in interwoven interests with the mass media. This is a government that clashes with every institution that it has failed to put under its control, but also a government that does not hesitate to carry out police searches in citizens’ homes to silence freedom of expression, even satire.
