Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou after his meetings with the President of the Hellenic Republic and Foreign Minister of Greece

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd November 2020, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou had today a meeting with the President of the Hellenic Republic Mrs. Aikaterini Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace. After the meeting, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL stated the following:

“We had a very constructive and meaningful discussion with the President of the Hellenic Republic, during which I outlined the position that what is important at this stage is to create the preconditions for a resumption of substantive negotiations, but on the basis of the agreed framework.

A systematic effort must be undertaken by the international community as a whole, primarily by the UN, but also by those who can influence Turkey to withdraw its unacceptable demands for a two-state solution and to accept the resumption of substantive negotiations on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation as set out in the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.

Greece can contribute towards this end with the improvement of its relations with Turkey and developing a dialogue to resolve their differences.

Unfortunately, it is obvious that the priorities of Turkey and Mr. Erdogan are different on this and it is important that a systematic effort should be made, focused on the goal of the solution on our own part in order to achieve on the one hand the abandonment of the goal of a two states solution by the Turkish side and on the other hand the resumption of substantive negotiations.”

A meeting subsequently took place with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Mr. Nikos Dendias at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after which Andros Kyprianou stated the following:

“With the Greek Foreign Minister, we reviewed the given conditions as they have evolved after the assumption by Mr. Tatar of the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community. We have assessed the facts as they have developed and the increased degree of difficulty that exists with regards the resumption of substantive negotiations and on the basis of the agreed framework of the solution. Nevertheless, we have agreed that there is no other choice but to try for the respect of the agreed framework of the solution by the Turkish side and to resume substantive negotiations with a view to reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.”

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL is in Athens for meetings with the state and political leadership, heading an AKEL delegation which includes Toumazos Tsielepis, a member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and Head of the Cyprus Problem Office of the Party and Marina Savva, member of the C.C. of AKEL.

Today, the AKEL delegation will also meet with the General Secretary of the C.C. of the Communist Party of Greece KKE Demetris Koutsoumbas at the KKE central offices at Perissos and at 18:30 p.m. with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximou Palace. Tomorrow, Tuesday, 3rd November 2020, at 12:00, the AKEL delegation will have a meeting with the President of SYRIZA Alexis Tsipras at the central offices of SYRIZA.
