The scandal itself is the problem, not its revelation

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th September 2020, Nicosia

The unsubstantiated targeting of MP’s and their assistants in relation to the leak to the mass media of documents regarding the naturalization of investors, is dishonest and humiliates parliament and the democratic morals in our country. It is, of course, a devious attempt by the government to distract from the substance of the issue. That is to say, the scandal that has assumed international dimensions with regards the golden passport industry set up by the Anastasiades-DISY government. Besides, the fact that the government has not been disturbed at all by the leak of documents in relation to previous governments, nor ordered any investigation is in itself revealing about the ulterior motives.

The Anastasiades government right now should have been addressing the fact that European institutions are explicitly naming Cyprus for undermining the rule of law through the market of selling citizenships. The problem is that the government provoked the scandal with its policies with its policies and not because the scandal came to light.
