The recent appointments of General Directors of Government Ministries confirm that the ruling DISY party is methodically implementing a plan to put public administration under its complete control. People of known abilities and experience were once again pushed aside so that the chosen people of DISY and the President of the Republic could be promoted.
For sure this isn’t the first time this has happened. Besides, for many months now, AKEL’s specific complaints about service staff plans that change arbitrarily and job promotions that are distributed in a targeted manner in order to serve cronies. From the appointments of Directors-Generals of Ministries, up to promotions in the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) and the recruitment of new employees in Public Works, from the consecutive promotions of the Commander of the Presidential Guard to the eventual invalid appointment of a DISY party official to the position of Director of the Press and Information Office, these all constitute an organized plan for putting the entire state machinery under the control of DISY forever. Appointments, job promotions, recruitments, the whole state has become a booty that is being plundered by the Right.
This also bares to all the government’s slogans about the reform of the public service system. When the government ruling forces insist on practices that harm the productivity of the public administration and promote cronyism, then it is obvious that they are not interested in the reform of the Public Service, but in controlling and completely subduing it.
These mentalities infuriate society and especially young people, regardless of political affiliation. The need for drastic institutional changes in the Public Service becomes even more imperative in order to eliminate or minimize any room for such arbitrariness by DISY, but also and by any future government. In this direction, AKEL is undertaking an effort to elaborate specific proposals on the matter.
