People understand that precisely because the government has no answers, it resorts to accusing AKEL
Statement by AKEL Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th June 2020, Nicosia
In the statement of the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL there are six references – not one – to Turkey’s aggression and to the Turkish occupation. However, the Government Spokesman, commenting on the statement, claimed that AKEL “forgets” to denounce Turkey. Perhaps the Government Spokesman was expecting that the General Secretary of AKEL would to talk ten instead of six times about Turkey’s aggression.
The government’s tactic of resorting to distorting AKEL’s positions, is well known, believing that it will portray the Left as Turkey’s advocate. But this tactic is failing. The Cypriot people know that AKEL not only denounces Turkey’s aggression against Cyprus and Greece, but that it is the force that makes use of its international relations and presence in the European Parliament so that pressure is exerted on the occupying power to consent to a solution of the Cyprus problem based on principles.
As much as the government is trying to confuse the people in this unacceptable way, people understand that precisely because the government has no answers, it resorts to launching accusations against AKEL.
