Cyprus ranks last but one in EU expenditure on Culture

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18 June 2020, Nicosia

According to figures released by Eurostat for 2018, Cyprus ranks last but one in the table with regards state expenditure on Culture across the EU. The amount the Cypriot government has spent on culture is 50% of the EU average. The Eurostat figures confirm the miserable reality in which people in culture are called upon to work, but they also confirm also AKEL’s constant references to the devaluation and depreciation cultural creation by the Anastasiades-DISY government.

The government must stop considering Culture as of secondary importance in its policy. Unfortunately, in yesterday’s government announcement of new support schemes, the field of Culture was again ignored. The government ruling forces, without further delay, must proceed with the announcement of a substantial economic set of measures to support working people in the field of culture and also support actions that will help restart cultural activity.

AKEL will continue its tireless efforts to finally put Culture high on the priorities of government policy.
