The international community must stop the annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories by Israel
Palestine: 53 years of occupation
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 5th June 2020, Nicosia
The 5th June 2020 marks the 53rd anniversary of the aggressive war of 1967, during which Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, the Syrian Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula. Fifty-three years after the occupation of the Palestinian territories, the Israeli government is declaring that it will proceed to the annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories. With the full support of the United States and the disgraceful “Deal of the Century” that they themselves drafted to serve their expansionist goals, and under the veil of silence that was created in the midst of the pandemic, Netanyahu-Gantz are moving forward with their illegal plans.
AKEL denounces the illegal annexation plans and stresses that the crime of the 53 year old occupation cannot be legitimized by a new crime. The international community must stop its tolerance and impunity towards Israel. At this very critical time for the future of the entire region, an end must be put to Israel’s illegal plans and the immediate termination of the Israeli occupation and settlement policies must be demanded. The immediate recognition of an independent and viable Palestinian State on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital must be demanded, as the relevant Resolutions of the UN set out and the right of refugees to return to their homeland safeguarded.
AKEL calls on the Cypriot government to take a position against this flagrant violation that is about to take place next to us. Will the government remain silent in the face of such contempt for international law, the Resolutions of the UN, the rights of a people under occupation and colonisation? With what credibility will the Cypriot government speak tomorrow about the rights of Cyprus, about Turkey’s violations of international law, if today the Anastasiades government is silent again for the sake of Trump and Netanyahu?
