Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou after the meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Cyprus Mr. Xingyuan Huang

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 1st June 2020, Nicosia

We had a very productive meeting and discussion with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China. During the meeting, we exchanged views on both the experience we have gained in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, on international developments and the need for international cooperation in the battle against the pandemic, as well as on developments surrounding the Cyprus problem.

We are deeply concerned about the way the United States is handling issues in relation to the battle against the pandemic. We consider that what is demanded is the greatest possible international cooperation, so that we can confront this and any future pandemics. Unfortunately, the way in which Mr. Trump and his government are behaving limits this possibility.

At the same time, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China has authorized me to express his gratitude for the cooperation they had with the Cypriot government and with AKEL throughout the whole of this critical period. Furthermore, I would like to convey China’s steadfast position on the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and China’s given position which is based on principles. That is to say the relevant Resolutions of the UN, the High-Level Agreements and international law must be supported as the principles on which the Cyprus problem must be resolved.

On our part we have expressed our satisfaction with the steadfast support and solidarity which the People’s Republic of China provides in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. At the same time, we have requested that this support continues in the future as well, with the first stop, of course, being the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) this coming July, which all of us must admit will be a difficult phase.
