On President Anastasiades’ interview on “Alpha TV”

No surprises about the government’s “attack” on the opposition and the non-assumption of any responsibilities

Statement by AKEL Parliamentary Representative G. Loucaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23rd May 2020, Nicosia

In his interview on “Alpha TV”, President Anastasiades, judging by his own experience, with his well-known arrogance and sarcastic remarks, accused opposition parties of serving pre-election expediencies and advised us not to worry that he is going to be a candidate for the presidency. This certainly is no surprise to us since we are talking about a President of the Republic and a government that has never taken on any responsibility for their mistakes and omissions. Nor did we subsequently expect him to comprehend that the biggest share of responsibility for seeking consensus lies with the current President of the Republic himself, especially when he leads a minority government.

When, in the period of pandemic, despite certain reservations or concerns, the opposition parties backed government bills apart from one, each and every one can easily determine whether the opposition parties have been guided by any electoral considerations or whether the they have taken a responsible stance.

As everyone can also judge whether the positions expressed by the opposition parties from the very beginning on the government bill on state guarantees to the banks were determined by any pre-election considerations or whether it is in fact the arbitrariness, arrogance and expediencies of the Anastasiades-DISY government which led them to reject the government bill in question.

AKEL does not need to fabricate anything to engage in opposition. Citizens themselves are making countless accusations against this government. Finally, let Mr. Anastasiades allow us to continue worrying because, unfortunately, at the helm of the country there is a government of limited responsibility.
