Statements by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A.Kyprianou after meeting a KKE delegation

5th March 2020

kke akel“I’d like to express our joy for the meeting we had with the delegation from the Communist Party of Greece, headed by comrade Demetris Koutsoumbas, General Secretary of the Party.

You know we have long-standing fraternal ties with KKE. We have waged together common struggles, participated jointly in struggles on an international level and I consider that the roots of friendship and cooperation are very deep between us.

During the meeting we had the opportunity to exchange views and brief each other on the situation in Cyprus and in Greece, and of course to express our deep concern about how the situation in the wider region is evolving, because of Turkey’s escalating aggression, with the imperialist wars that are ongoing and which are provoking huge problems and forcing millions of people to flee their countries, seeking to save their lives, in the hope of a better future elsewhere. We also of course exchanged views about the national issues Greece and Cyprus face.

On our part, we briefed (the KKE delegation) on the latest developments surrounding the Cyprus problem. We expressed our deep concern about Turkey’s escalating provocations and aggressions that are developing in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone, as well as about Turkey’s provocative actions for the possible colonalisation of the enclosed city of Famagusta.

We have made it clear that as far as we are concerned, we will resist all these machinations and at the same time we shall continue the effort for the resumption of substantive negotiations, provided that Turkey’s provocative actions will have been terminated, with a view to arriving at a solution of the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN resolutions, the High-Level Agreements, international law and on the principles on which the EU is founded on.

We also exchanged views on how the EU operates, expressing our disagreement with the EU’s participation in aggressive wars, but also with how it operates on a lot of important issues too. We expressed our concern about the economic policies being promoted and which aim at maximising profits, simultaneously cutting incomes from the people of labour to serve the select few and not the many, the people.

We also exchanged views on the need to strengthen the peace movement. For that reason, we shall cooperate in the direction of building up the peace movement, as well as upgrading the cooperation between us to fulfill this goal.

I won’t say anything more, but just say that we have said that we will be in systematic and frequent contact, to exchange information and views on various issues that concern our countries, but also the wider region, the European Union, the world as a whole and I would like to sincerely thank Comrade Demetris and the delegation from the Communist Party of Greece for the very constructive, comradely and frank discussion we have had.”
