AKEL calls for mass participation in anti-nuclear mobilisation
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21 April 2019
26th April marks 33 years since the devastating accident at Chernobyl. On this occasion, we once again join our voices and reiterate our opposition to the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant on Turkey’s southern coast.
For years we have been warning of the danger in relation to the serious environmental consequences arising from the construction of a nuclear power station just a few kilometers away from the coast of Kyrenia. Nuclear power has shown how dangerous it can be. We are reminded of this every day by the victims of Chernobyl and Fukushima. An accident or a leak, apart from the environmental disaster it causes, will endanger the lives of thousands of citizens in the wider Mediterranean region.
We therefore call on all citizens who share our concern to take part today on Monday 22 April 2019, at the end of Ledra Street, at 19:00 p.m. in a symbolic event. We shall form a human chain along the buffer zone to convey to all our people living in Cyprus our common message, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, against nuclear weapons.
