The government completely silent on the Menendez-Rubio bill

Statement by AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Representative – Yiorgos Loucaides on the Menendez-Rubio bill

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th April 2019, Nicosia

The Anastasiades government, Foreign Minister N. Christodoulides and the leadership of DISY maintained their silence regarding the questions we posed yesterday on the Menendez-Rubio bill.

We ask again, in case they may try to give explanations to citizens:

– How is their celebratory tone about the content of a Cold War bill whose main goal is to combat Russia’s presence and influence in the South East Mediterranean and for the US’ full sovereignty in the region consistent with their declared position for a foreign policy that does not turn against any third country?

– How is the dogmatic and one-dimensional turning over of Cyprus to the US aggressive strategic plans in our region in line with the professed position of Anastasiades government, Foreign Minister and the leadership of DISY about a multilevel foreign policy?

– Consequently, how does an independent sovereign state accept that third countries formulate its own national security strategy, in particular the US, as stated in paragraph 19 of the relevant draft bill?

– Is that how they perceive the “Cyprus belongs to the West” dogma – that we are puppets of the US? To allow others to formulate our national security strategy on the basis of their own interests and not those of our people?

Citizens expect answers.
