Presidential Palace aiming to control information, either by hushing up facts or by channeling selective news

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8 February 2019, Nicosia

The denunciations made by the Association of Social Reform (OPEC) about authoritarian and unethical interventions by the government and ruling forces in the mass media and against journalists with the aim of exercising control over the information provided confirm our own information that the Presidential Palace is engaging on a daily basis in this unacceptable practice.

The Presidential Palace has hired a significant number of advisors to deal with the control of information, either by hushing up facts or by channeling selective news to create fake impressions.

This practice by the government and ruling forces is eroding freedom of expression and the freedom of the press.

This practice is unacceptable and must stop because it harms democracy.
