We have a long way to go as a state and as a society as regards equality, racism and discrimination

Statement by Aristos Damianou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL and MP

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30 January 2019, Nicosia

The institution of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights (Ombudsman) has greater than before possibilities, but also obligations in the Republic of Cyprus. In a state where citizens’ human rights are being brutally violated due to the Turkish occupation, the responsibility of state institutions to protect the human rights and civil liberties of Cypriot citizens from violations by the state itself is dual.

The Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights (Ombudsman), as the Equality Authority and the Anti-Discrimination and Racism Authority, has always been charged with the responsibility for such protection to be provided against any arbitrary and unlawful actions by the administration, but also individuals; a responsibility which, through its mission and responsibilities, it must exercise with determination and impartiality.

Unfortunately, we have a long way to go on issues regarding equality, racism and discrimination as a state and as a society.

AKEL will support by all means the strengthening of the institution, given that its success or failure affects the protection of rights and the rule of law in Cyprus.
