AKEL C.C. messages to comrades Raul Castro and Miguel Diaz-Canell, On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Cuban Revolution
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Cuban Revolution, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Andros Kyprianou sent the following message to the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba comrade Raul Castro, and to the President of the State Council and Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba comrade Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Dear comrade,
On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Victory of the Revolution, I convey to you the warm and militant greeting of solidarity of AKEL towards the people and the Communist Party of Cuba. The 1st January 1959, which marked the overthrow of Batista’s dictatorship subservient to the US and the beginning of socialist construction in Cuba, represents a glorious historic milestone for the world revolutionary movement, for the struggles of the peoples all over the world for freedom, independence and popular sovereignty.
Throughout these 60 years, the Cuban Revolution has not only withstood the aggression, blockade, and subversion, but has recorded remarkable achievements in education, health, social welfare, the position of women, sport, culture and popular participation. Furthermore, the thousands of humanitarian missions and educational assistance offered to dozens of countries around the world, in combination with Cuba’s policy based on principles and the solidarity it has pursued in its foreign policy, express in a concrete manner the deepening of the internationalist and humanistic content of the Revolution. We particularly appreciate the consistent solidarity of Cuba and the Communist Party of Cuba towards the struggle Cyprus is waging against imperialism, the foreign occupation and division.
AKEL expresses its trust towards the Communist Party of Cuba in the process of updating the economic model of the country in order to strengthen and deepen socialism. We salute the procedure of popular consultation on the constitutional reform with the mass participation of Cuban citizens, a fact which confirms that the socialist construction in Cuba constitutes a choice and cause of its own people.
The return of the US to the tactics of open aggression against Cuba, as expressed by the Trump Government, the rhetoric of the new President of Brazil, but also the various anti-Cuban resolutions of the Right and ultra-right wing in the European Parliament, are a reminder that the overthrow of the Cuban Revolution continues to be a goal for international imperialism. On behalf of AKEL, you can count on our steadfast firm solidarity towards the struggle for the abolition of the American blockade against Cuba and for the return of the territory of Guantánamo to Cuba, so that the sovereignty of Cuba and the choice of its people for the country’s path of development is respected.

The Cuban Revolution has been written in world history as a page of patriotism, humanism and internationalism; a page of dignity, heroism and selflessness. It is a flame that inspires not only Communists, but also every person and every people of the world struggling for a better future; a future of peace, freedom and social justice.

Dear comrade,
On behalf of the Central Committee of AKEL and myself personally, I express our warmest wishes to the people and leadership of Cuba on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. The Cuban Revolution is a source of inspiration in the struggle of the peoples of the world for independence, popular sovereignty and social justice. The Cuban Revolution is genuinely popular and as such has the strength to overcome difficulties. For 60 years now it has been moving forward. The social, economic and cultural gains of the Cuban people, which have been achieved in the conditions marked by the blockade imposed on it over many years, are irrefutable proof that the Cuban people continue to defend the Revolution and the socialist construction in their country.
On this occasion, I would like to express AKEL’s appreciation towards the leadership of the Revolution which is taking decisions so that the achievements of socialist construction are protected and to ensure the sustainability of the economic model in the direction of deepening socialism. We are following with interest the democratic participatory consultation process for the updating of the Cuban Constitution in which millions of Cubans are taking part who not only do not accept the restoration of capitalism or subordination to the US, but are at the forefront in the defence and constant improvement of the socialist system.
The Trump administration takes care to remind us on a daily basis that Cuba is still being targeted by the US, and for that reason international solidarity towards Cuba continues to be indispensable and imperative. You can count on the solidarity of AKEL and the mass organizations of the Peoples Movement of the Left of Cyprus to terminate the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US against Cuba and for compensation to be rendered to the Cuban people for the damages and losses it has suffered. You can count on our solidarity for the closure of the American base-hellhole of Guantánamo and the return of its territory to Cuba. At the same time, AKEL, together with the Left in Europe, will continue to repulse the anti-Cuban and anti-communist scheming and machinations of the European Right inside the European Parliament.
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, we express our appreciation for the long-standing diplomatic and political support of Cuba towards the struggle of the Cypriot people for the defence of the sovereignty, independence and unity of our homeland. The José Martí monument in Nicosia and the statue of Archbishop Makarios in the port of Havana will represent timeless symbols of the friendship between our peoples.
Dear comrade,
The legendary figures of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel, Che, Camilo, Vilma Espín Guillois, Raul are not just symbols of the patriotic dignity of the Cuban people. They are universal symbols – just like the Cuban Revolution itself – of the universal and international struggle for the world of justice, social equality and freedom.
