AKEL congratulates the new President of WFDY

 

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL after his meeting with the new President of the World Federation of Democratic Youth

First of all, permit me to thank Nicholas Papademetriou, who is with us today, for the important role he has played over the past three and a half years as President of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY). He is succeeded by Iacovos Tofaris in the Presidency of WFDY, whom I would like to congratulate on the important position he is undertaking.

This is a development that honors Cyprus. I consider the fact that the rest of the youth organizations trust and are assigning to EDON this important post for several years now a very big success for EDON too. This proves that EDON is doing a very good job and that an attempt is being made for the World Federation of Democratic Youth to function in a collective and an objective way, and this, I reiterate, is credited as a great success for EDON.

Of course it is not just the formal, but also the substantive issues. WFDY participates in a great number of international meetings and events. It has many podiums and forums through which the Cyprus problem, the cause of Cyprus, together of course with the other problems that currently exist in the world, can be promoted and internationalized. I consider the contribution of the militants from the EDON Youth organization extremely important from this honorary post they hold. I would therefore like to congratulate them, and wish Iacovos all the very best in his work and congratulate EDON for the fact that its work and role is recognized by all the other youth organizations around the world.
