AKEL on International Women’s Day
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7 March 2018, Nicosia
On the occasion of 8th March, AKEL addresses a warm and militant greeting to all women in Cyprus. We send a warm greeting to every woman, to every working woman, unemployed, mother, young woman, farmer, intellectual and pensioner. We also salute the thousands of immigrant women living and working in Cyprus.
The struggle for equality and parity continues to be timely. The real meaning of 8th March is to be found in the struggles for social and labour rights, gender equality, peace and social justice; for the elimination of all forms of oppression and discrimination that women currently suffer at work, in education and in their participation in political and social life. However, unfortunately, inequality, oppression, discrimination and violence against women continue to exist in many forms, which are reproduced and, in some cases, increasing.
AKEL will continue to stand by women and to support the women’s movement and its demands. AKEL is co-operating with the women’s movement in the struggle to defend fundamental labour rights, social pensions and the welfare state in general. AKEL supports the National Mechanism for Women’s Rights. At the same time, it considers the unification of all the structures and institutions dealing with equality issues under a Single Equality Authority imperative and as the way to tackle these issues in a more comprehensive and effective way.
AKEL welcomes the co-organization by POGO and the Working Women’s Bureau of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) of the 8 March mass event under the slogan “Bread and Roses: The Struggle for Social Justice Continues” which will take place on Saturday 10th March at 10:30 am. We call on Cypriot women, and our people in general, to participate in this mobilization.
