AKEL: The bloodshed in Syria must stop!
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th February 2018, Nicosia
As humanity is following the ongoing bloodshed in Syria and the mass crimes committed on a daily basis, it is once more being confirmed that the cost for the plans to impose border changes, the division of states and the competition for the control of energy sources and pipelines is being paid by the peoples with their blood, lives, displacement and uprooting.
As much as the fact that none of the warring sides in Syria is innocent but promoting its own interests, it is also true that the responsibilities for the outbreak of this bloodshed can’t be equated. The root of the war in Syria lies in the fierce geopolitical clashes between major powers in our region which have been triggered by the operation waged by NATO, EU, Turkey and the Gulf Monarchs to overthrow the Assad government. In these efforts they didn’t hesitate to equip and fund forces from which the Islamic State’s murderous formation also sprang. We shouldn’t also forget that the EU with the unanimous decisions it adopted in 2014 also contributed to the arming and financing of these forces.
On the other hand, at the same time as Turkey, which played a leading role in the consolidation of the IS and in the operation to destabilize Syria, is waging attacks in Afrin, the NATO Secretary-General did not hesitate to recognize “Turkey’s legitimate concerns over its security”, as well as “Turkey’s right to tackle them”. Therefore, instead of supporting the Kurdish forces in Syria who were waging a heroic struggle against the “Islamic State” organization, Turkey is allowed to attack them, while within Turkey itself, the Erdogan government is ruthlessly persecuting anyone that is opposed to the Turkish attack in Syria.
Today, the demand for an end to the bloodshed and war in Syria is imperative and universal, and of course, that any plans for a division of Syria must be stopped which are exacerbating the conflict.
Cyprus cannot be indifferent to all that is happening in neighboring Syria. Every citizen and every organized group must take a stand.
To demand peace and the solution of the Syrian issue with the respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
To demand from the EU and all its member states that they contribute towards the hosting of refugees from Syria.
To demand that an end be put to the barbarity of war and imperialism, which is shedding the blood of the people of Syria and threatening all the peoples of our region.
To participate in the anti-war mobilization being organized by the AKEL Limassol District Organization and the Cyprus Peace Council (CPC) this Friday, 2nd March 2018, at 6:00 pm, at the Governor’s Square, which will be preceded by a demonstration from the “Pattichion” Municipal Theatre of Limassol at 5: 45p.m.
