Our goal is to unite and not to divide; to put forth proposals and not indulge in demagogy; to convince the people of our positions
Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A. Kyprianou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th January 2018, Nicosia
Opinion polls reflect tendencies in society when they are ongoing. Under no circumstances do they represent the result of the ballot box. We analyze all polls and draw useful conclusions.
We note with satisfaction that the tendency in all the opinion polls conducted demonstrate that Stavros Malas will be in the second round of the Presidential Election. This is not going to lead us astray, nor will this tendency make us complacent. We will continue to work to support the candidacy of Stavros Malas with prudence, seriousness and mainly by projecting political arguments and positions.
If others have exhausted their possibilities, if their arguments have lost ground, if they have been overcome by panic and want debate to engage in petty infighting instead of having a political discussion, we will not follow them. Our goal is to unite and not to divide; to put forth proposals and not indulge in demagogy; to convince the people of our positions, seriousness and responsible stand.
Mr. Anastasiades had offered whatever services he had. We can’t expect from him to offer anything more to Cyprus and society in general. Even his supporters are concerned that he will once more prove to be unreliable, and if he is re-elected he will undermine whatever has been left standing over this five-year period. Neither has Mr. Nicolas Papadopoulos proposed something different other than the policies both he – together with the President of governing DISY party A. Neofytou – have imposed on the Cypriot people. Nor of course can he or wants to propose something specific, and that is feasible for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country.
On the other hand, Stavros Malas both wants and can deliver. He has a programme for Cyprus’ future. He doesn’t represent the country’s privileged groups. He isn’t the candidate the vested interests and establishment want in power. He is the candidate every progressive person is pinning his/her hopes on. He is the candidate who knows the needs of ordinary working people, the unemployed, the new scientist, small-medium businesses, all those in need and who aspire to a different Cyprus. For the reason that to put it simply he is one of us. Stavros Malas is the hope for the majority of the people which is why he deserves the trust, support and vote of all of us. With Stavros Malas we will lead Cyprus forward to the tomorrow that unites us.
