Message of the Central Committee of AKEL to the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis (Annual Conference)

Gerry Adams

President, Sinn Fein

Nicosia, 14 November, 2017

Dear comrade Gerry Adams,

The Central Committee of AKEL conveys its warm and militant greetings to the Sinn Fein leadership, militants and members and Conference delegates, on the occasion of this year’s Ard Fheis. We wish every success to your Conference and look forward to receiving its decisions and resolutions.

Sinn Fein has established itself as a mass party with close contacts with working people and the broader social movements. It has been active in various mass struggles, defending and promoting people’s rights and interests. As a result it has won the respect and hearts and minds of working people, as reflected in its subsequent growth and electoral advances.

AKEL particularly appreciates Sinn Fein’s all-round, principled and consistent contribution towards the peace process, particularly in the light of the ongoing attempts by reactionary and sectarian forces to derail, undermine and in effect destroy the whole process. We are in solidarity with your persistent struggle to get the institutions back up and running in the north, as well as your efforts aimed at developing reconciliation and understanding. Your vision for an agreed and united Ireland based precisely on reconciliation and equality with the radical transformation of the political system remains as timely as ever.

Cyprus and our people know very well just like you the results of British colonial and imperialist practices. We are struggling against the ongoing Turkish occupation and the attempts to consolidate partition through the imposition of new fait accomplis. We are struggling for the liberation and reunification of our country and people and to turn Cyprus into a bridge of peace and friendship. We oppose the attempts to turn our island into an aggressive launching pad against the peoples of our sensitive region. We count on your solidarity too.

AKEL express once again its readiness to develop further our close relations not just on a European Parliament, but also on a bilateral level. We believe that in view of the volatile dangerous international climate due to imperialism’s intensified aggression against the peoples and the sovereignty of states it is imperative that the left and progressive forces should by rallying their forces take specific joint actions and initiatives for defending people’s interests against austerity, but also for peace, democracy and social progress.

In solidarity,

Andros Kyprianou

General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL
