People know very well how much the President fulfills his pledges

Statement by the Head of the Economic Research Bureau of AKEL Charis Polycarpou on the government’s recent announcements

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th July 2017, Nicosia

With the upcoming Presidential elections in mind, the government has recently proceeded to numerous pledges and pre-election announcements, relying on the budget surplus that has been created.

However, we must remind everyone that it is this government that has proceeded to impose cut backs in social benefits, even higher than what the Troika itself was demanding back then in order to create a fiscal “cushion”.

It is this government that drastically cut spending on health and education and curbed the developmental budget.

It is the Anastasiades government that for the last four years was declaring that the Memorandum represents its own economic manifesto.

Today it has decided that austerity is against growth and has changed tactics. It is exploiting the surpluses created from the little people had to make pledges and project a hope having the 2018 presidential election in mind.

People know very well how much the President fulfills his pledges.
