Big private interests, allied with DISY and DIKO appear to be scheming to submit amendments that will serve these interests

Statement by Yiorgos Loukaides, AKEL Parliamentary Representative

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th May 2017, Nicosia

AKEL welcomes the agreement reached between the social interested parties on the issue of the contributions as regards the General Health Scheme. This development is credited to these social forces who have put the public interest over and above all else and, in particular, the urgent need for the legislation on the Scheme to proceed in a consensual way.

The Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB), and more specifically the big private interests it represents, remain the sole dissenting voice in this national effort; private interests that are pesistent in their attempts to block or derail the General Health Scheme from its predetermined for fifteen years universal character, as this has been reaffirmed in the two meetings held at the Presidential Palace last summer.

In these attempts, it appears that big private interests, as in many other cases too, have allies in the leaderships of ruling DISY and DIKO parties, which not only do not specify their intentions, but appear to be scheming to submit amendments that will serve these very interests to the detriment of patients and society. We hope that, even at this late stage, the persistent information and reports about the intentions of the DISY and DIKO leaderships will be refuted.
