AKEL C.C. pays homage to comrade Fidel Castro Ruz
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd December 2016, Nicosia
The Plenary of the C.C. of AKEL, which convened today Friday 2nd December 2016, observed a minute’s silence in memory of the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro.
The farewell speech follows:
“The Central Committee of AKEL bids farewell today to Fidel Castro Ruz, the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, President of the Cuban Republic and Leader of the Communist Party of Cuba.
Fidel has left his mark all over the world as few other international leaders. Fidel, the most important leader of the Communist and Left movement in the second half of the 20th century, opened up new paths when others were announcing about the end of history. He resisted in tough conditions the imperialist plans and the US blockade against the Cuban people. He struggled and believed in the common people, devoted to the ideals of Marxism-Leninism, building socialism.
The Cuban Revolution throughout its process over fifty-seven years resisted the obstacles and endless attacks waged against it. Against all forecasts made the Revolution withstood and is looking to the future with confidence, because it is deeply rooted among the people and because it is an authentic revolution that its people struggled for, won and defended, a Revolution that serves the people.
Fidel would not have been the inspired revolutionary without the heroic Cuban people, and Cuba without Fidel would not be the Island of Freedom, the symbol of resistance and dignity, and a shining beacon for the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa and for all struggling peoples.
The great internationalist will always accompany us, with his analysis and thought, the struggles for progress, peace and socialism. On our island Cyprus we will remember him as a comrade who knew the Cyprus problem well and who was a precious friend of Cyprus, who stood on its side in all the difficult moments since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, forging close relations of friendship and solidarity with President Makarios during the creation of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The militants and members of AKEL, all progressive Cypriots, bid farewell to the great revolutionary, internationalist and communist.
We make the pledge to the Cuban people, that together with all progressive humanity, we stand on the side of the people, the government and the Communist Party of Cuba, next to all of you who continue the path and struggle of the heroic visionary leader of the Cuban Revolution, declaring that history will vindicate him!
