NATO means wars and uproots people. AKEL addresses a call for a mass antiwar event on Saturday, 2nd July
AKEL C.C Press Office, 28th June 2016, Nicosia
Next week the NATO summit is due to take place in Poland, focusing mainly on “addressing the challenges in the Alliance’s eastern and southern borders.”
This Summit marks a new step in NATO’s aggression and in the dramatic militarization which is developing in East Europe and the Mediterranean. Besides the deployment of four reinforced multinational battalions is already being promoted in the Baltic region and Poland, in addition to the so-called anti-missile shield and NATO forces which have been stationed for some years now in Eastern Europe against Russia. At the same time, the North Atlantic Alliance’s military presence is being strengthened by various means in the troubled eastern Mediterranean. Furthermore, NATO now demands from its members in Europe to increase, in the midst of a crisis and austerity, their military expenditure and to further deepen NATO’s synergy and coupling with the EU. It should be noted, moreover, that the EU has announced from last year an “investment shift” towards the war arms industry!
These developments demonstrate that the NATO war machine is constantly and drastically reinforcing its power. However, the peoples know what all this means in practice. It means wars, interventions, the shedding of blood, mass waves of refugees drowning in the Mediterranean Sea and refugees crowded on Europe’s doorstep. It means divided countries and slaughtered peoples.
AKEL joins its voice with the peace movements that are organizing mass mobilizations and actions across Europe next week against NATO and the decisions due to be adopted at the Warsaw Summit. The opposition to the ongoing imperialist wars and the demand for the dissolution of NATO is the starting point for developing real solidarity with the displaced refugees from Syria and our entire neighborhood.
AKEL calls for a mass participation in the event organized by the Pancyprian Peace Council to be held next on Saturday, 2nd July at 10 a.m. in the Castle Square in Larnaca and in the symbolic “human chains” that will be formed in all the districts of free Cyprus.
