AKEL’s 2014 accusations on attempts to privatize CYTA confirmed

Written statement by Aristos Damianou, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and Member of Parliament

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th June 2016, Nicosia

cyta1In 2014 when AKEL made accusations in the House of Representatives that officials of the Semi-governmental Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) handed over sensitive information and data on a plate, with the blessing of the Anastasiades-DISY government, to the German giant Deutsche Telekom, through its subsidiary Detecon, we were mocked and rebutted, even by the Finance Minister who at that time characterized these accusations as rubbish.

The Auditor General’s report which has been released confirms our accusations. Information on the organizational structure, operational plans and financial indicators were given. In short, set data and facts were handed to a contender by way of privileged information, on the pretext of the preparation of a study, in an attempt to promote the privatization of CYTA

Based on the findings of the Auditor General, we expect answers from the government and the relevant Minister.
