Public health sector deliberately being led to a dead-end by the Anastasiades-DISY government
Statement by Athos Georgiou, Head of the Health Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th June 2016, Nicosia
Cypriot society is daily following in astonishment the negative developments in the health sector at a time beset by huge problems.
The public health sector is deliberately being led to a dead-end by the Anastasiades-DISY government. The reduced budgets on health (the lowest throughout the EU), the understaffing and lack of personnel, increased workload, lack of materials, low morale, job insecurity, low pay and lack of any perspective and vision are just some of the problems that characterize everyday life in the state health sector.
At the same time we cannot but raise the issue of the treatment received by certain groups of patients, such as patients with congenital heart disease, given that without their views being heeded, without the therapeutic centre guaranteed they are continuously being informed that another doctor or centre without adequate staffing will be treating them.
We call on the relevant authorities to put aside their differences, to listen to the concerns of society and finally focus and address seriously and responsibly the problems that plague our hospitals and to provide the necessary solutions patients and health professionals need.
