Andros Kyprianou, G.S. of the C.C. AKEL has sent today a letter of condolences to Gennady Zyuganov, President of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation regarding the passing away of Andrei Filippov.
Andrei Filippov has contributed greatly to the international communist and progressive movement as Head of the International Relations of CPRF for more than 20 years and through his work at the International Department of the C.P. of the Soviet Union. He was a close and trusted friend of Cyprus and AKEL.
Subsequently, you will find an extract from the letter.
“It is with deep sorrow that we received the news of the passing away of our dear comrade Andrei Filippov. Please, accept the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Central Committee AKEL and personally myself, as well as of the thousands of militants and members of our Party, including many of our comrades who had known and worked with him over many years.
As Head of the International Relations Bureau of AKEL I too had the honour and privilege of working closely with him on many issues, but also got to know comrade Filippov very well as a friend and as a warm and deeply engaging human character. This is not only a great loss to the CPRF and the communist and progressive movement of Russia, but also for the international communist movement in general.
Comrade Filippov will always be remembered as a sincere, principled, consistent and devoted communist and internationalist, a fighter for peace, national and social liberation. His contribution to the development of the international progressive students and youth movement, including the World Youth and Students Festivals, was broadly recognized. Particularly important and decisive was his overall contribution towards the unity and joint action of the international Communist movement, especially after the difficult times that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the socialist community.
All those that have known Andrei even those disagreed with him recognized his deep knowledge of the international communist and progressive movement as well as of international affairs.
Comrade Andrei Filippov was a true and reliable friend of AKEL, Cyprus and its people for many years. His contribution not only to the all-round development and consolidation of the long-standing relations between AKEL and the Soviet and Russian communists and between the Cypriot and Russian people, but also between our two countries in general cannot be stressed strongly enough. We shall always treasure the memory and example of comrade Andrei. As AKEL we shall honour his legacy and memory by continuing and indeed deepening further the close relations between our two Parties and peoples.
Please, convey our deepest condolences to his family, comrades and friends.
Once more, permit me to express my sincere grief for his passing away.”
