AKEL denounces Turkey’s military attack into Syria’s northern territories

AKEL denounces Turkey’s military aggression into the northern Syrian territories against Kurdish fighters, but also against the forces of the Syrian army, an action which constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

This development further inflames the situation in our region with enormous dangers for peace and the security of the peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean.

In addition, Turkey’s attacks against the Kurds and the Syrian army in effect facilitate and serve the murderous forces of the “Islamic State”, which should have been the immediate and principal enemy for all sides.

NATO, the US, Turkey and other powers bear severe responsibilities for creating the crisis in Syria and the bloody civil war, for the suffering experienced by the Syrian people, but also for the dangers that threaten our entire region.

These forces therefore not only must not throw any more fuel onto the fire, but instead everyone’s actions without exception should be aimed at preventing the plans for a military intervention by land forces in Syria and in general must aim at deescalating the military tension. This is what the best interests of the Syrian people and all peoples of our neighborhood, including the Cypriot people, demands.
