AKEL condemns Israel’s intensified aggression against the Palestinian people

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th October 2015, Nicosia

palestine interIsrael is once again provoking with the unacceptable escalation of its aggression against the Palestinian people. This time, Israeli authorities are aiming to turn the Palestine issue into a religious conflict.

After the Israeli regime’s recent violations in the historic Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem by Israeli government officials and ultra-right circles, a new cycle of violence and confrontation has broken out between Israel and the Palestinians. On the pretext of the tension that has been caused, the Israeli government has increased its attacks on Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, resulting in the killing of three and injury of more than 1,600 Palestinians so far. In addition, Israel is continuing its unacceptable practice of exercising collective punishment by demolishing Palestinian homes and waging mass armed attacks against Palestinian civilians.

The international community must intervene immediately to deescalate the attacks and condemn Israel’s aggression, without adopting the unfair stand of equal distancing between the two sides.

As AKEL, we reaffirm our solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people and reiterate our position for an end to the Israeli occupation and the full recognition of the Palestinian state. At the same time, the illegal expansion of Israeli settlements and the imprisonment of Palestinian political prisoners must stop.
