Report presented by AKEL Central Control Commission (C.C.C.) on the issue of Dromolaxia
Statement of the Central Committee of AKEL

The Plenary of the Central Committee (C.C.) of AKEL, in its session today, discussed the Report presented by the Central Control Commission (C.C.C.) on the issue of Dromolaxia and the recommendation of the Political Bureau on the matter.
The C.C. of the Party approved a decision assigning the C.C.C with the task of examining how the Party and its various mechanisms acted on the issue of Dromolaxia; to investigate whether bodies and members of the Party acted in accordance with the Statutes, Regulations and principles of the Party and with the moral and ethics governing the functioning of AKEL.
The C.C. of AKEL, having discussed the Report of the C.C.C. concludes to the following:
- It has been substantiated that AKEL has no relation and involvement with illegal acts and irregularities that were evidently committed in the case of Dromolaxia by involved businessmen, public officials or other persons.
- AKEL’s political adversaries and others invented the alleged involvement of AKEL in the Dromolaxia scandal to besmirch the party’s name in society. The way this scheming was set up and who its protagonists were, is unmistakably demonstrated by the recorded conversations of the lawyers and associates of Nikos Lillis. The course of events became the basis of the scenario referred to in the recorded conversations and this is what the scheming that was set up proves.
- All that was testified at the trial in no way prove AKEL’s involvement or the charges of bribery against AKEL in the Dromolaxia scandal. On the contrary, nothing was proved against AKEL, nor against Venizelos Zannettou. The fact that comrade Venizelos was arrested, questioned, charged and sentenced for alleged extortion is the result of the agreement Lillis concluded for his immunity. Comrade Venizelos is the victim of the plot that was set up against the Party. Venizelos Zannettos is innocent and is unjustly in prison.
- However, the C.C. of AKEL has found mistakes, omissions and culpability on behalf of cadres and has taken decisions about which the party membership will be informed in the immediate future.
- The C.C. of AKEL stresses the determination of the party to continue combating phenomena that are alien to the principles, statutes and history of the party, and/or give the opportunity for attacks to be waged from different directions, aiming to discredit and damage AKEL.
