AKEL C.C. Press 23rd March 2015, Nicosia
On Wednesday 18th March 2015 a meeting was held in East Jerusalem between the member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and MEP Neoklis Sylikiotis and Hanna Amireh, member of the Political Bureau of the Party of the Palestinian People (PPP) and member of the Executive Council of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). Vera Polycarpou, member of the C.C. of AKEL and member of the International Relations Department of AKEL also took part in the bilateral meeting.
During the meeting a briefing was made about the situation in occupied Palestine, focusing in particular on the faits accomplis on the ground which Israel is continuing to create at a rapid pace both through the colonisations in the West Bank, as well as in East Jerusalem. Furthermore, there was an exchange of views on the results of the parliamentary elections in Israel with the strengthening of the Right and about the consequences this will have for the Palestinians. The Israeli Prime Minister’s statements that he will not accept the creation of an independent Palestinian state while causing deep concern about the new government’s future steps at the same time must not permit to the international community to implore that it doesn’t see the full violation by Israel of the UN resolutions, but also of all the agreements since Oslo onwards.
Within this framework, AKEL’s practical and unwavering solidarity towards the struggle of the Palestinian people, as well as the close relations between the two Parties was reiterated.
The meeting took place on the side lines of the visit to Palestine of the European Parliament Delegation for the Relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council.
